Van Cao real name is Nguyen Van Cao, born November 15, 1923 at Lach Tray (now Lach Tray ward, Ngo Quyen District), Hai Phong city, but were born in a village An Le, Lien Minh, Vu Ban, Nam Dinh province. Born in a family of officials, Van Cao's father was the director of capital Haiphong water plants [3]. In Hue, Van Cao wrote "A cold night on the river Hue Forum", is considered his first poem [4].
1942, to follow the advice of the Pham Duy and Van Cao left Hai Phong to Hanoi.
