Van Cao real name is Nguyen Van Cao, born November 15, 1923 at Lach Tray (now Lach Tray ward, Ngo Quyen District), Hai Phong city, but were born in a village An Le, Lien Minh, Vu Ban, Nam Dinh province. Born in a family of officials, Van Cao's father was the director of capital Haiphong water plants [3]. Childhood, Van Cao hoc Bonnal in elementary school, then high school on line Saint Josef School, where he began studying music. In 1938, when only 15 years old, because of family decline, Van Cao left school after the end of the second year of secondary level. He worked as telemarketers in the post office in Haiphong, but then gave up a month .
In late 1930, Vietnam launched new musical. In Hai Phong then concentrated pioneering musicians like Dinh Nhu, Le Thuong, Van Cao Hoang Quy ... join the group of Hoang Quy Dong Vong and To Vu, My Canh, Do Nhuan ... and started songwriting debut as "Sad artisanal" in 16 years [3]. Dong Vong group, Van Cao also composed several songs such as scouting playful "Mountain Wind", "Dong Da Mound", "You pretty portable". Also during his stay in Haiphong, Van Cao acquainted with Pham Duy, then as a singer in the troupe Duc Huy. Pham Duy was the one who sang "Sad artisanal", helped the song become popular. 1940, Van Cao take a trip to the South. In Hue, Van Cao wrote "A cold night on the river Hue Forum", is considered his first poem [4].
1942, to follow the advice of the Pham Duy and Van Cao left Hai Phong to Hanoi. He rented a small attic 171 Mongrant City - 45 Nguyen Thuong Hien today - and observers attending in Indochina Fine Arts College. Van Cao also wrote poems, stories, novels posted on Saturday [5]. 1943 and 1944, Van Cao twice appeared in Salon Unique exhibition held at the Khai Tri Tien Duc, Hanoi with the oil painting "Girl puberty", "Repentance", "Midnight" .
